About WSS
Internet Communication and Collaboration
Connect to the Internet: Connecting@Berkeley
The Connecting@Berkeley CD and web site provide software and instructions to make it easier for UC Berkeley faculty, staff, and students to connect to the Internet through UC Berkeley.
Email: CalMail
CalMail provides free email accounts to all current UC Berkeley students, faculty, and staff. The CalMail web site allows you to create and customize an email account and create and maintain mailing lists. You can check your mail through a web browser, too. (If you're not already connected to the Internet, see the "Connect to the Internet" section above.)
Calendaring: CalAgenda
CalAgenda is an online calendar service for faculty and staff. CalAgenda automates calendar management and meeting scheduling, while helping departments to share resources like conference rooms and projectors.
Computer labs: Workstation & Microcomputer Facilities
The Workstation & Microcomputer Facilities (W&MF) provide general access and instructional computer labs with both Macintosh and Windows-based computers for the campus community. Check the W&MF web site for information on locations, hours, available software, walk-in classes, class reservations, and other supported services.
Internet File Storage and Sharing: Cal WebFiles
Cal WebFiles provides 50MB of secure online file storage space to UC Berkeley students, faculty and staff.

Computer support for departments: Departmental On-site Computing Support (DOCS)
The Departmental On-site Computing Support (DOCS) group provides computing support to campus departments at the customer's site for a fee. This service is intended for those departments that do not have their own local support staff or do not have enough computers to warrant hiring a full-time support person.
Computer repair/hourly support: Campus Computer Repair and Support
Campus Computer Repair and Support, a unit of the Scholar's Workstation, provides a complete range of support services for operating systems, applications and connectivity including Ethernet and dialup for Macs and PCs and performs contract-based support services on an hourly basis.
Faculty and Staff Consulting
Connecting@Berkeley Faculty and Staff Consulting (formerly Dr. Micro) provides assistance with getting connected to the Internet via the campus network and general software support for the Connecting@Berkeley CD. To reach C@B Consulting, call 642-8899 or write to consult@cab.berkeley.edu.
Student Computing Consulting Services (SCCS)
SCCS provides students with assistance in getting connected to the campus network via dial-up services.
Computer Training: CAL PACT
CAL PACT offers free computer training to all UCB staff employees. Courses are two to three hours, and involve hands-on training with one computer per participant. Detailed handouts are provided with each class so exploration and learning continue back on the job. Classes are small, with no more than 18 participants, and are team taught by two instructors, allowing time to have questions answered.
Computer store: The Scholar's Workstation
The Scholar's Workstation (TSW) offers a large variety of computers, peripherals, and software for sale to individuals at academic prices to the campus community. You can find most of the popular commercial software products here. You can also find recommended configurations for Macintosh and Windows computers on the TSW site.
Software Distribution
Software Distribution sells software covered under campus or UC-wide licenses, deals or contracts. This software is available to campus faculty and staff for academic, educational or organizational use. Much of its software is specialized academic software, such as statistical packages or mathematics applications.
Departmental Software Purchases: Technology Resource Center
Departments that need to make bulk purchases of software from vendors such as Microsoft, Apple, and Adobe can purchase volume licenses from this site.
WSSG Software
The Workstation Software Support Group provides free software for the campus community on this site. Software includes site-licensed email, anti-virus, SSH secure shell, TN3270, and more including older versions of the Mac OS. Most of the software products are updates to the software distributed on the Connecting@Berkeley CD. Software download requires a CalNet ID.
Software for the Berkeley Financial System (BFS)
You'll find the Citrix client to use with BFS here.

Workstation Support Services (WSS) supports Berkeley campus departments and the faculty, staff and students in making effective use of information technology in a distributed computing environment. WSS provides support services at the local level for academic, research and administrative users of microcomputer technology and networking.
It is the only campuswide organization serving campus computer users from all departments. WSS provides those products and services which are most effectively centralized and promotes the successful, independent use of workstations and workstation networks. WSS assists in setting campus standards for workstation hardware, software and networking and promotes adherence to standards through coordinated service offerings.
Organizational Structure
WSS consists of six groups:
Business Services Unit
Departmental On-site Computing Support (DOCS)
Workstation & Microcomputer Facilities (WMF)
Workstation Hardware Support Group (WHSG)
Workstation Software Support Group (WSSG)
The Scholar's Workstation (TSW)
